Estimating Masonry Materials
Calculating how many bricks you need requires knowing the size of the brick and the thickness of the mortar joint.
- Standard US Modular Brick: Typically measures 8 inches long and 2 ¼ inches high.
- Mortar Joint: A standard mortar joint is usually ⅜ inch thick. The mortar effectively increases the surface area that each brick covers.
- Waste Factor: It is standard masonry practice to add 5% to 10% extra for breakage, cuts, and corners.
Mortar Estimation
As a general rule of thumb, you will need approximately 7 bags (70 lb each) of masonry cement and about 1 cubic yard of sand to lay 1,000 standard bricks.
