Exponents vs. Logarithms

Exponents and logarithms are opposite operations, just like addition and subtraction, or multiplication and division.

What is an Exponent?

An exponent (or power) tells you how many times to use the base number in a multiplication.
For example, 2³ = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8. Here, 2 is the base and 3 is the exponent.

What is a Logarithm?

A logarithm answers the question: "How many of one number do we multiply to get another number?"
Using the previous example, log₂(8) = 3. This asks "What power do we raise 2 to in order to get 8?". The answer is 3.
