What is Torque?
Torque is a measure of the force that can cause an object to rotate about an axis. Just as force is what causes an object to accelerate in linear kinematics, torque is what causes an object to acquire angular acceleration.
τ = r × F × sin(θ)
- τ (Torque): Measured in Newton-meters (N·m) or pound-feet (lb·ft).
- r (Radius): The distance from the pivot point to the point where force is applied (m).
- F (Force): The applied force (N).
- θ (Angle): The angle between the force vector and the lever arm. Maximum torque is achieved at 90°.
